Why Smartwatches Are Anything But Dead

Smartwatches are dead. The market is breaking. The technology is already dying again, before it has even prevailed – the headlines were just like that a few weeks ago. The reason for these rather daring and premature statements were the figures of the International Data Corporation (IDC) for the third quarter of this year, which many journalists were plunging into. In the meantime such reports are no longer to be found, but the rapporteurs have sometimes not rejected the theses.

Anyone who decides to buy a Samsung Gear S3 or an Apple Watch Series 2 these days will have big eyes. No matter what model it is – they are sold out. On Samsung’s official Facebook page, for example, there are numerous comments from interested parties, which are inquiring about the coveted Smartwatch. Due to the high demand, unfortunately, there are currently delays, the South Korean electronics giant lets its users know and apologizes for the waiting times.

Pre-orders for the Samsung Gear S3 were possible until 17 November. Then the company sent the smart watch, which is available in a classic version and as a sportier frontier version. But even by pre-orders is to be read at Samsung that they are still waiting for their ordered model. The company does not seem to have been prepared for this rush. As a foreseeable dispatch date is now indicated in the shop of the South Koreans the 5th of December.

And quite similar is the toughest competitor of Samsung – Apple. The purchase of one of the new Apple Watch Series 2 is also anything but simple. Most of the new Intelligent Timepieces from Cupertino are also not available at the moment. Here the company often announces the middle of December as the next date, to which the Apple Watch Series 2 can be reckoned. When looking for Apple stores, which still have the product in stock, it also looks poor.

The two draft horses Apple Watch Series 2 and Samsung Gear S3, which were presented in the last quarter, exemplarily repel the black painting with regard to the Smartwatch market. When the sales figures collapsed, the two Wearables first got their big appearance. For example, Apple had not launched a new product, which is likely to explain the intermittent burglaries. In this segment, the Californians remain the undisputed leader with a market share of around 45 percent.

In the course of the presentation of the Gear S3 at the IFA in Berlin, our editors were able to get a picture of the hype around the smart clock. A little later, the latest Apple Watch triggered at least as much euphoria. Exact sales figures of the two corporations to their Smartwatches can not find so short time after the official appearance. At the latest at the next evaluation of the IDC study, the current impression should also be black on white: Smartwatches are anything but dead.

A further boost is expected for the next year. This is mainly due to the fact that Google’s search engine Googlegigant now finally provides its long-awaited new Smartwatch operating system Android Wear 2.0 – and also itself two smart watches launched. Many manufacturers have been waiting for the improved software and therefore no new products are launched in 2016. This will definitely change 2017: Then come all the foreseeable after the Sony Smartwatch 4, the Motorola 360 3, the Pebble 2 or the Huawei Watch 2, to name only a few prominent examples. More likely for 2017 is probably that the industry will boom as never before.
