Monotype is working on a technology for rendering the font shown on screens of smart watches
Smart watches have a clear limitation when showing content: its small screen.Although their functions are not intended for us to be a long time in front of the screen, even in quick glances resolution and font size can be annoying when reading a message, see a notification or find the name of an application the menu.
Usually the LED screens of smart watches have an approximate resolution of 320 x 230 pixels, some numbers in light of the recent resolutions we are seeing in the new smartphones years, which can be as high as QHD. That is why it is vitally important that the font is perfectly readable on the screen smartwatch, something that the company is working Monotype.
The company is developing a technology dubbed Spark, and basically allow display high-quality characters on the touch screen of LED smart watch offered on Central LED Watch. To understand where the current problem lies, it is necessary to explain how to generate and display the letters in the current smart watches.
As in most smartphones or computers, smart watches and other wearables make use of fonts bitmaps that are already pre-encoded on these devices, something that makes less power necessary to generate these characters. However, as with everything also it has its downside, and that is if the screen does not have a substantial resolution makes us see the pixelated and blurry letters. How to solve this problem? This is where comes into play Spark.
Spark allow us to appreciate the typography of our smartwatch with the same quality as in the smartphone
Being aware of this problem, Monotype decided to find a second application to iType, a technology that had previously developed to render and display with high quality typography in conventional size screens. Spark pursues the same idea but applied to the world of smarwatch, fitness band and other wearables.
As we see in Wired, there are other major challenges that confront manufacturers smartwatch as is readability in high brightness conditions , which is especially important considering the constant interaction with the device. For now we know how to render the Apple Watch in these two aspects, although the company announced that its features Retina display technology.
