Pyramid Transamerica

Pyramid Transamerica (USA) – description, history, location. Exact address, phone number, website. Reviews of tourists, photos and videos.

The architectural dominant of the business center of San Francisco is the Transamerica pyramid, popularly called the spire. An elegant 48-story skyscraper, which stands out sharply against the background of traditional “box” architecture, was erected in 1972 by order of the insurance corporation Transamerica Corp. The author of the project is the architect William Pereira, whose opponents argued that the outrageous creation would never fit into the usual urban silhouette. However, over time, the building has gained the status of San Francisco’s most notable landmark.

What to watch

The pyramidal silhouette of the skyscraper is broken only by two wings rising to the 29th floor. An aluminum spire 64 m high rises above the roof with a “pearl crown” – a powerful lamp illuminating it. Even higher is a red beacon for aircraft. The walls are lined with slabs of artificial quartz, gleaming in the rays of the sun and night illumination. There is no observation deck, you can view the circular panorama only from the windows of the conference room on the 48th floor.

At the foot of the pyramid is Redwood Park with its pines and ferns, a green oasis in the concrete jungle of downtown.

Tourists are not allowed to enter the building. But at the entrance from the side of Clay Street there is a Visitor Center, where the picture from the television cameras installed on the spire is broadcast on large screens. Video films about the history of the building are also shown here and souvenirs are sold.

Pier-39

Pier 39 (USA) – description, history, location. Exact address, phone number, website. Reviews of tourists, photos and videos.

The popular Pier 39 area of San Francisco, as the name implies, is located in the bay, on the site of former piers, directly opposite Alcatraz Island. Despite this proximity, the atmosphere here is the most direct: Pier 39 is full of shops, restaurants and cafes, attractions and entertainment centers. However, this is not the main attraction of the area – the main magnet, which invariably attracts crowds of tourists and locals to Pier 39, are California sea lions.

The hilarious pinnipeds chose the old piers that remained unaffected by the reconstruction as their place of residence – and began to massively settle there, not paying any attention to the city noise and tourist hubbub. The city of San Francisco helped the lions settle in by building additional “piers,” and Pier 39 is home to at least a thousand animals today.

Pier 39 is also interesting for the huge San Francisco Aquarium, which is home to about 20 thousand different representatives of cold-blooded animals. Here you can learn more about the underwater fauna of the bay, walk through a glass tunnel in the water column and even touch the stingray.
