MEASUREMENT OF HEART RATE
The Gear S3 monitors your heart rate. Of all the smartwatches already tested by me, this was undoubtedly the one that presented more precise results, when compared with the measurement with an electronic device of measurement of blood pressure and the manual count.
The monitoring can be defined in intervals of time, it is always done after the exercise and can be done whenever the user so wishes.
GPS AND NAVIGATION
Having a watch with integrated GPS and able to navigate independently, without using the smartphone, is an added advantage of this Samsung Gear S3 Frontier. This feature also allows you to activate the SOS commands, sending the location to a previously selected contact in case of danger.
CALL AND MESSAGE MANAGEMENT
Being able to make and receive calls through this watch is a very interesting advantage. Basically it works as a Bluetooth headset (this model under analysis, since there is a model with integrated SIM card and it will work totally autonomously).
The quality of the calls is very good, taking care to bring the watch closer to the face when speaking, so that the other person hears the voice with more quality.
The negative aspect I encounter is that the watch is not smart enough to detect that it is not on the wrist and not receive the calls in that situation. Or even when it is not on the wrist and we initiate a call through the smartphone. The same, instead of starting to call on the phone, starts on the clock.
For messages and even notifications of chat messages you can send quick, pre-defined answers, emojis or even voice. When saying something to be sent as text, Gear S3 is able to interpret very well what is said to him, in English as well as in Portuguese. The fact that Portuguese is the one of Brazil, the words that were not well interpreted were rare.
OS Voice is the voice command service and to activate it there are different forms: directly through the application, with two clicks followed by the application access button, or through the pre-defined voice command “Hello Gear” or another user-defined voice command.
Asking to call someone or send a message through these commands may not be easy task, asking to see the time, know the day or consult the agenda, until it works well.
Well, this is one of the great trumps of the Samsung Gear S3. Keep the display on permanently to show the hours, like any traditional clock, but with as little battery consumption as possible. But is it really useful?
I still have not surrendered to the ever-connected screens. In addition to considering this unnecessary functionality (speaking of smartphones) in terms of presenting information, the battery consumption turns out to be higher. In the case of this watch, exactly the same thing happens.
Having the hours always visible is not exactly an advantage or necessary, since when you have to consult them you have to advance with the wrist in front of our eyes, and only this movement will already cause the screen to wake up and show the necessary.
Then, in bright surroundings, especially in sunlight, it is difficult to see the hours on this screen, so it is necessary to activate it even so that the lighting is intensified. Always-On also causes the battery consumption to increase to double … or more.
Let’s talk about power consumption, then. We have a watch with a battery of 380 mAh, with Bluetooth connection, always receiving notifications, which makes calls, step counts, monitor the exercise and heart rate and a few things.
Surprisingly, this battery can offer the user the promised: 3 to 4 days of use (I would say no more than 3 days, but the 4 days are also possible). However, by activating the Always-On option on the screen, this consumption increases and the autonomy increases to a maximum of 1.5 days in the same conditions of use.
Charging is done inductively and takes about 2 hours to fully charge. The Gear S3 Frontier can be used as a loading dock (this was not tested since the original box was not available for analysis), or use the smaller dock, as shown in the image.
Samsung has hit the concept of a smart watch. The design, features, synchronization with smartphones, integration of GPS, the quality and technology of the screen itself, the “circular” concept that interacts with the clock, are all very advantageous points of this Gear S3.
Still, there are things to improve a lot, namely a more stuffed application store, a smarter S Voice … and also a more interesting price.
The Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is available in the national market starting from € 331.
