The climate of Bergen

Bergen is located on the Byfjorden, in the southern part of Norway. Bergen is surrounded by seven mountains, of which Fløyen and Ulriken are the best known. Bergen is the second largest city in Norway, only the capital Oslo is bigger. Bergen has its own international airport, which can be easily reached in various ways. A reasonable proportion of visitors who come to Bergen do so by cruise ship. Not infrequently, several large cruise ships are anchored.

According to bridgat.com, the city has several cultural attractions, such as Edvard Grieg’s house and the beautiful harbor. It is especially worth a visit at nightfall. The sun then shines a beautiful glow over the old houses. The historic harbor district of Bryggen is the city’s most famous landmark. Bergen is also a popular starting point for visiting the fjords. The city is the starting and finishing point for the “Hurtigruten”, a shipping route that runs along the coast of Norway.

The climate of Bergen is quite humid. So humid, in fact, that there are several umbrella vending machines in the city and an annual rain festival with umbrella parade is held. In this way, the rain is used as a marketing tool. Smart of the tourist office, because in many cases precipitation is seen as something negative when it comes to city trips.

Despite all the rain, the temperature is very mild. Due to the warm Atlantic sea current, it remains relatively warm in this city and the temperature in winter only drops a few degrees below zero. Within the Köppen-Geiger climate system, Bergen has the same climate as the Netherlands: a moderate maritime climate. The summer months are not too hot. Count on maximum temperatures that on average will remain just below 20 degrees. That this is an average is shown by the statistics available for Bergen. This shows that in the months of July and August there are about 20% summer days (at least 25 degrees), about 35% warm days (at least 20 degrees) and about 45% below twenty degrees. The chance of tropical weather (at least 30 degrees) is not great, but it is present.

Rain

We already said it above: in Bergen you have a reasonable chance to deal with rain or other precipitation. In an average year there are more than two hundred days in which precipitation falls. In recent years, the number of days with at least 0.1 millimeter of precipitation has decreased. Over the period 1971-2000 this was an average of 234 days. In the next climatic period, this amounted to 196 days. That makes a difference of about fifteen percent. The average precipitation sum also decreased slightly: from 2668 to 2412 millimeters per year. What you can clearly conclude from the statistics is that Bergen is a wet destination. The wettest months are September through January. That is why spring and early summer are the best travel times for Bergen. The chance that you will then have to deal with rain remains considerable.
